Congratulations!

Congratulations to North Merrick teen readers for making this year's Teen Summer Reading Club a success!
The party, held at Merrick Library, was terrific: there was karaoke, there was DDR, there were Wii sports, there was plenty of pizza and delicious Italian ices. In the raffles, one NM teen won a $20 GameStop gift certificate, and there were lots of other great prizes.
Look at the next post for reviews of books the North Merrick teens have recommended.

Teens who could not attend the party can pick up their certificates, their reviews, and their party favors at the adult reference desk.

NM teens have read these great books...

Author: Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow
Title: The Last Lecture
Rating: Great read
Recommend to a friend: Yes, I would recommend this book to a friend because it wqs a book that had an important message. The message was to never stop fighting. Randy can teach everyone a lesson about what life really is about. It’s about family, friends, and love.
Best Part: The best part of the book was when Randy told stories about his life. He told everyone what life was all about. When he told stories about his life, like when he want to Disney Land, I got drawn in because I like to learn about the experiences of others. It’s exciting to see what things he did that I also did.

Author: Ann Hood
Title: The Knitting Circle
Rating: Okay
Recommend to a friend: Yes, I would recommend this book, because it has a message everyone should understand. The message is that whenever something or a couple of bad things happen, there is always something to fall back on. For Mary it was knitting. But yours comes to you in a special way, like it came to her.
Best Part: The best part of the book was when Mary realized that she had to become friends with her mom again. She realizes this because her mom had a small heart attack. She would live, but Mary realized that there may be more heart attacks, and if her mother died before they resolved their problems, it would haunt her the rest of her life. This was my favorite part.

Author: Jean Craighead George
Title: My side of the mountain
This book made me feel shocked in places. The best part is when Sam Gribly attempts to tame a falcon.
The book would be enjoyed most by guys in grades 6-7. Rating: 4 stars

Author: Sarah Mlynowski
Title: Spells and sleeping bags
I had mixed emotions while reading this book. The most interesting part was when the main character, Rachel, finally got a kiss from her boyfriend, Raf. The book would be enjoyed most by girls in grade 7.
Rating: 7 stars

Author: Rumiko Takahashi
Title: Inu Yasham Book 1
The book made me feel aq bit frightened, but left me entertained. The best part was when Kagome returned home. The book would be enjoyed most by guys in grades 7-8. Rating: 9 stars
From: Bridget

Author: Natsumi Mukai
Title: + Anima, Book 5
This book made me feel happy—always happy to read + Anima!
The most interesting part of the book was when one of the characters, Husky, gave another character, Naha, a present. The book would be enjoyed most by girls and guys in grade 7. Rating: 8 stars
From: Bridget

Author: W.P. Kinsella
Title: Shoeless Joe
The book made me feel passionate about fulfilling dreams, and curious as to what the purpose of heaven may be. In one of my favorite parts, J.D. Salinger, the writer who is a primary character in this novel, exits the right field wall of a baseball diamond that farmer Ray Kinsella built. Did Salinger enter the entrance to heaven? Will he get to fulfill his dream of playing on the Polo Grounds?
Everybody would enjoy this book. Rating: 9 stars

Title: Ripped at The Seams

Number of Pages:326

Rating: Great Read

Recommend to a friend: Yes I would recommend this book to a friend because it is about something that some people are interested in: fashion. Sami wants to be a designer. She travels to New York City to find a job. She gets turned down alot and then she gets a job as a secretary. She is really happy and then one day her boss steals her designs and says they are his own. She quits after that and starts over at a lingerie store called Beneath The Sheets. She starts her own designs of sleep wear and is a big hit. Best Part: my favorite part was when she started making her sleep wear for ladies that come to the store. She first started with a lady that came to the store many times and whom she was friendly with. Then people heard about her and started to go there and get her designs.

Author: Rick Riordan Title: The Lightning Thief Series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians

This book made me feel scared and excited. The most interesting part of the book was everything! I felt a rush of anticipation when reading this book. It was cary and funny at the same time, from Percy fighting a monster, to fighting Ares, this book really kept me on my toes! Would be enjoyed by guys and girls in grades 6-10. Rating: 10 stars from: Stephanie

Title: Shes got the Beat Number of Pages:320 pages Rating: Great Read Recommend to a friend: Yes, I would recommend this book to a friend because it was a book that gave you a laugh and a reason to always try different things. Miranda was always a quiet girl in her old towm in Texas but now she is in a band and playing the drums like a pro. Who knows what will happen while she's at college in Austin. Best Part: The best part of the book was when Miranda's played in a huge concert with her new band. This was a big part because this concert only takes in the best bands in Austin and its very hard to be able to preform there. Miranda's old band was there too. The concert went from 8 at night till 8 in the morning. Miranda's band was at 9 o'clock and Mirandas old band went at 4 am. From: Danielle

Author: Vivian VandeVelde Title: Remembering Raquel This book made me feel curious to analyze the bias of various individuals to determine Raquel’s traits and cause of death. It was te most interesting when a nurse, named Patricia Saye-Evans, uncovered Raquel’s mother’ss DNR. (When a DNR is signed, permission is granted to let the dying perish when the person can be saved.) Raquel never wanted her mother, Cleo, to die of cancer, so she stole Cleo’s DNR. This can be seen as a clue into Raquel’s death. This book would be enjoyed most by girls in grades 7-9. Rating: 7 stars. OK to post on Blog: yes. From: Joshua

Author: George Orwell
Title: 1984 This book convinced me that society can become totalitarian with the help of technology. Every movement , every facial expression, every thought was detected on telescreens (today there are security cameras watching over us). If people were “heretics,” or went against the Party (the government in 1984), they were brainwashed in prison to obey everything the Party said. The Party could rewrite history the way they desired it to be. Although we are not as totalitarian, Orwell did a somewhat accurate prediction of the future: the government covers up many things; our government has led us to think that the people of Iraq have committed wrongs that hold them responsible for the war, but we should be looking at entirely different people. Like the Party slogan says, “war might be peace.” Would be enjoyed most by everybody in grades 9-12. Rating: 10 stars. OK to post on blog: yes From: Joshua

Author: Sarah Mlynowski Title: Frogs and French kisses. This book made me feel happy and excited. It was most exciting when Rachel finally discovers she has magical powers and is a witch! Just like her mom and sister! The book would be enjoyed most by girls in grades 7-9. Rating: 10 stars. OK to post to blog: yes by: Stephanie

Title: Main Street #5 The Secret Book Club
Number of Pages:212
Rating: Great Read
Recommend to a friend: Yes I would recommend this book to a friend. I would recommend this book because it is a book with a fun mystery. I would think of a mystery as a story where a detective goes into a dark room and is greeted by a scary thing and then he uncovers the mystery, but this book is different. The girls get books from a mystery person and they read the books and each do something that the person tells them to do. Like the person told them to do something adventurous on the Saturday because in the book the characters went on adventures. In the end the mystery person reveals themself. Madame X, who is this person?
Best Part: My favorite part of the book was when they discussed the books on Saturday. They were not all dicussed on the same day. When they discussed they told what the books were about and what happened in them. It gave me some ideas on books to read. from: Danielle
